Local Landmark Recognition Program
Local Landmark Recognition Program
The City of South Pasadena has a long tradition of supporting the community’s efforts to preserve the built environment. There are currently seven individual properties and two historic districts which are listed in the National Register of Historic Places. In addition, there are approximately 183 properties and two historic districts included in the California Historical Resources Inventory, 59 designated local landmarks and five locally designated historic districts. The City promotes the preservation of its cultural resources through the Cultural Heritage Commission and its Cultural Heritage Ordinance.
The Cultural Heritage Commission is entrusted with the duty to recommend to the City Council recognition of the owner(s) of designated Landmarks. Since the earliest days of the City’s formal cultural heritage program, this has been accomplished through a local landmark recognition program which offers a commemorative bronze plaque for public display.
Interested property owners are encouraged to invest in a commemorative plaque for their landmark property. All properties that have been admitted to the City’s local landmark register are eligible. The Commission recommends that plaques be mounted at a location on or near the building and visible from the street.
The City has developed a simple application for the program accessed through our website or mobile app. The shape of the commemorative bronze plaque is oval and measures 8 ¾ x 12 5/8. Mounting instructions and hardware are included. The cost of the plaque is approximately $500.00 and the plaque is purchased through the City’s approved vendor, Southern California Bronze Company.
