Seed Library

The Seed Library is a free seed distribution program created in partnership with the South Pasadena Community Garden

In 2023, the South Pasadena Public Library was awarded $22,470 through the Sustainable California Libraries program, operated by the California State Library. Funding went toward the creation of the Seed Library and a series of sustainability-themed programming, including a speaker series, Repair Cafe, and more!

Frequently Asked Questions

Who can check out seeds?

Anyone with a South Pasadena Public Library card in good standing is able to check out seeds. Click here for more information on how to obtain a library card.

Do I have to return the seed packets?

Nope! We simply check out the seed packets as a means of monitoring Seed Library usage. You are not expected to return the seed packets and they should not appear as checkouts on your account.

How many seed packets can I check out?

The Library allows for three (3) seed packets per checkout per patron.

What seeds do you have?

Seed selection varies widely based on donations and seasonal availability. Generally, we stock fall/winter seeds between September and March and spring/summer seeds between April and August.

Where do the seeds come from?

The seeds in our Seed Library have been generously donated by the South Pasadena Community Garden and the Ace Hardware of South Pasadena. We also have a small section of community seeds, donated by members of the South Pasadena community.

Can I donate seeds?

Yes! Community members are welcome to donate seed packets to the Seed Library. Please review the information located under the Community Seeds section of the Seed Library page on our website for additional information.

Community Seeds

Due to popular demand, we have reserved a small section of the Seed Library for "community seeds". Community seeds are seed packets that patrons have donated to the Library. Community seeds may be dropped off at the Adult Reference Desk whenever the Library is open. Please review the rules for community seed donations below:

  • Seeds must be donated in a brand name packet (i.e. Ferry-Morse, Back to the Roots, etc.). We will not accept unlabeled or plastic bags.

  • Seeds in the donated packet must match the packet they are donated in.

  • We only accept seeds. We do not accept plant clippings.
