Hazardous Waste

South Pasadena contracts with Athens Services for disposal of normal household waste. Athens does not permit the disposal of hazardous wastes in regular household trash receptacles. Waste such as paints, solvents, used motor oil, batteries and electronics shall be disposed of at appropriate facilities. For the location of permanent hazardous waste collection sites or the next hazardous waste event you can call (888)253-2652, or follow the link, LA Dept. of Public Works . An alternate link is, LA County Sanitation District

In addition you may contact Athens at (888)336-6100 or via the web at Athens Waste

Sharps/Syringes
It is illegal to dispose of sharps, (hypodermic needles, pen needles, intravenous needles, lancets, and other devices that are used to penetrate the skin for the delivery of medications) in your trash, recycling, or yard waste containers. It is best to utilize a safe sharps disposal-by-mail system. There are several companies which provide this service. Some examples:

Medical Waste Services
Sharps Compliance Inc
GRP Sharps Disposal Inc.

(The City of South Pasadena is not affiliated with, nor does it endorse, any of the companies listed above)

You may also collect your sharps and take them to a Household Hazardous Waste Roundup. You can get location and date information from their website along with valuable information regarding other hazardous materials.
