California Listens Project

In 2018 the South Pasadena Public Library was selected to participate in California Listens, a California State Library-funded digital storytelling workshop. The project collected local stories related to the "No on 710" Freeway Fight. Participants created short videos using personal images, videos, and archival materials.

The following videos were created during the California Listens project:

South Pasadena, 10 miles and 100 years from Los Angeles  Joanne Nuckols
The Walking Man  Clarice Knapp
Looking for Willoughby  Mark Gallatin
Never Give Up  Bill Sherman
Endangered Understanding Love  Glen Duncan
The Fight  Rick Thomas
The March  Harry Knapp
A City, A Freeway, A Fight  Sam Burgess
A Freeway Doesn't Run Through It  Steve Fjeldsted

On June 7, 2019, a special event was held in the South Pasadena Public Library Community Room to honor the “No on 710” Freeway Fighters. Featured speakers included Mayor Marina Khubesrian, MD, Councilmember Richard D. Schneider, MD, and authors Chip Jacobs and Frank Girardot. The event also featured the screening of the ten California Listens digital stories introduced by the authors. Singer/songwriter Brad Colerick provided a musical performance and South Pasadena Poet Laureate Ron Koertge read his poem “Ode to South Pasadena”. A recording of this event is available here.
